History was made as Barack Obama was elected as America’s first black president and unleashed a new sense of love and hope for the United States.
Around the world, news reports stated that many people expressed amazement and satisfaction that the United States could overcome centuries of racial strife and elect an African-American as President. Obama making US President certainly marks change in the mindsets of people and new expectations that come with it.
Obama will be inaugurated as the 44th US president on January 20, 2009, and inherit an economy in the worst financial crisis since the 1930s, two wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and a nuclear showdown with Iran. He has also promised to renew ties with US allies, and to engage US foes like Iran and North Korea.
When I reached home today one of the things I was looking forward to was to watch the news, I was supposed to go have coffee with dad but we both sat in front of the TV and waited to hear the new US President-Elect’s victory speech.
And in that moment, was feeling not felt in homes for years……with families gathering in front of the TV to hear what world leaders had to say, to seek inspiration from them and most importantly to seek hope for the future.
And in that moment, you could sense that the rest of the world might be looking forward to the same thing, that indeed the world is changing.
“It’s been a long time coming. But tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America,
All of those watching tonight from beyond our shores, in the parliament and in the palaces, those huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of the world, our stories are singular but our destiny is shared.
“A new dawn of American leadership is at hand.”
New US President-Elect Barack Obama
Danker out!
