This can only be described as an honour, to be one of the ambassadors of the Speak Good English Movement 2012.
The motto this year is Make Good English Stick. I’m gonna be the first to admit that I’m not that good at the language and of course I’m prone to messing up my grammar or spelling even. But I think that’s the whole point, that you should keep practicing and trying to stick to speaking good English. The key is to keep trying!
On the day of the launch I was quite surprised to see this huge poster of myself in the papers. Basically the idea behind the four campaign posters that you will see in libraries, newspapers and even at bus stops and on buses are simple things that you can do to improve your command of the English Language. Take my campaign poster for example, “Practice, Practice, Practice”. It’s something I live by even after being emcee for 10 years and in the media industry for 7……I still have to sit and practice my lines before I hit the stage.
I remember this incident over a year ago where a very experienced emcee asked for some help, he needed someone to do a voice over to open an event that another emcee was hosting. So I said ok, took a look at the script which was about 2 paragraphs long and started reciting it to myself.
He then said out loud “My god I can’t believe he’s actually practicing those 2 simple paragraphs”……sure he laughed but I didn’t care because we’re human so we are prone to mistakes and we need to practice. There’s no such thing as “because you’re more experienced means you don’t need to practice”.
With that, I’d like to say a big THANK YOU to the folks at The National Library Board for selecting me as one of their 4 advocates of Speaking Good English. I’ll do my best to make you proud!
